命がけであなたを救われた方、イエスさま

 

昔アメリカにある少年がいました。彼は早くに両親をなくし、祖母と二人で住んでいま した。ところが二人が住んでいる家が火事になってしまったのです。祖母は少年を助けようとニ階に上がり、炎に巻き込まれ死んでしまいました。取り残された少年は二階から助けを求めました。ところが火の手は大きく、集まった人々もどうにもできません。ある男が家の周りを良く観察すると二階まで届いている鉄パイプを見つけました。彼は焼けただれた鉄パイプを昇りました。男はその少年を見るとしゃがんで背中を見せ言いました。「私につかまりなさい」その背中に少年がしがみつくと、男は再び焼けた鉄パイプを降りてその子を助けたのです。  

数週間後、その少年の保護者を決定するために村の集会場で話し合いの時がもたれました。初めに農場主が立ち上がり言いました。「私は大きな農場をもっています。子供がのびのび遊ぶことができます。」次に教師が言いました「私は教師です。家にはたくさんの良い本があります。その子に最高の教育をほどこすことができます。」村一番の金持ちが言いました。「私の家は広く。立派な庭ももっています。家庭教師を雇い、その子に十分な教育をほどこすだけでなく、おもちゃ、旅行などたくさんの楽しみを与えることができ る。」次に村一番の名主、有力者が言いました。「私の家の子供になることが誰にとって も名誉なことではないでしょうか?」 

しかし、少年は顔を上げません。一人の男が静かに後ろのドアから集会場に入ってきました。男は黙って少年の前に立ちます。少年は顔を上げました。その男の顔に見覚えがあるようですが、思い出せません。男はそっとポケットからその両手を出し、少年に見せ ました。その手のひらにはひどいやけどのために出来た傷跡がありました。その両手は命をかけて、焼けた鉄パイプを上り下りした痕跡を留めていたのです。少年はそれを見ると男に飛びつき、ひしとすがりつきました。 農場主が去っていきました。教師が、金持ちが去っていきました。有力者が去っていき ました。最後に少年と男の二人が残りました。

わたしはこの話しが本当にあったことなのか知りません。しかし、ある真実を的確に指し示しています。私たちの多くが何と教育や暮らし向き、お金、地位などに惑わされ、それらを得る計画によって一生を費やしていくものでしょうか。それらのものは声だかに叫びます。『これこれのものがあれば幸せになれる!それがあなたの希望だ!』と。しかしあなたを焼き尽くす炎から助け出されたお方はいつもその両手をあなたに見せ、あなたに対するご自身の権利、主張を思い起こさせるのです。命がけであなたを救われた方、イエスさまはご自身のいのちを身代わりにし、わたしたちを神の子、神の養子としてくださいます。私たちの足下には地獄の炎が燃えています。そのままであれば、いずれあなたはこの世とともに焼き尽くされてしまうでしょう。しかしあなたのために命をかけて救いに来られた方がおられるのです。その方にすがりついてください。あなたが真にその方のものとなるのが神の計画なのです。

「彼(イエス・キリスト）はさげすまれ、人々からのけ者にされ、悲しみの人で病を知っていた。人が顔をそむけるほどさげすまれ、私たちも彼を尊ばなかった。まことに、彼は私たちの病を負い、私たちの痛みをになった。だが、私たちは思った。彼は罰せられ、神に打たれ、苦しめられたのだと。しかし、彼は、私たちのそむきの罪のために刺し通され、私たちの咎のために砕かれた。彼への懲らしめが私たちに平安をもたらし、彼の打ち傷によって、私たちはいやされた。」聖書・イザヤ53:3-5

「助けてくれー」

昔、中国で儒教の先生がクリスチャンになりました。その弟子たちが来て「先生はいつでも軽挙妄動をおさめておりながら、なんですか！あの毛唐がきて、いっぺん説教を聞いただけでクリスチャンになるなんて。それは聞こえません」と抗議を申しこんみました。そこで先生は次のような例えをしました。

「私は野原を歩いて、足を滑らせて野中の井戸に落ちてしまった。「助けてくれー」と叫んでいると、孔子が通りかかって声をかけてくれた。『お前はどうしてこんなところにいるのかね。』『野原を勝手に歩いていたもんですからおこっちたのです。』『それはいかん。ちゃんと人の通る道がある。道でないところをお前が歩いたから、こういうことになったんじゃ。以後気をつけれよ。ちゃんと人間の道をあるけよ』と教えて下さいました。けれども今、野中の井戸に落ちている私は、そんなことは千も万も承知しています。この井戸から出してくださる人が欲しいのです。

また「助けてくれー」と叫んでいると、足音が聞こえてきた。やれやうれしやと思ってみると、お釈迦さんでした。そしてまた『どうしてお前は落ちたのか。ああかわいそうなことをしたものよ。なんでも気をつけないとこんな目にあうぞ。助けてつかわすから手を出しなさい』とおしゃいました。手をのばしたら、お釈迦さんも手をのばしてくださまたが、どうしても一尺ばかりたりながったのです。そこでお釈迦さんは『さてさてお前は業が深いのう。前世の因縁じゃ、あきらめよ』とおっしゃって、向こうへ行ってしまいました。

だが、あきらめきれないので、「助けてくれー」と、なおも叫んでいました。するとこんどはイエス・キリストが来ました。いやなやつが来たな、と思っていやな顔をしていたけれども、なにせ、だれでもいいから助けてむらおうと思って手をのばしたところが、どうしてもたりないのです。そうしたら、そのキリストが井戸の中にとびこんで来て、しゃがんで『私の肩にのりなさい』というから、その肩にのったら、その肩の足をサーッと押しあげて外へ出してくれた。『もう二度と来るんじゃないよ』と言ってくださいました。「だから私は、キリスト教を信じたんだよ。」

So Busy They Don’t Seem To Have Time To Listen

There was once a fellow who, with his father, farmed a little piece of land. Several times a year they'd load up the ox-cart with vegetable and drive to the nearest city.

 

Except for their name and the patch of ground, father and son had little in common. The old man believed in taking it easy... and the son was the go-getter type.

 

One morning, they loaded the cart, hitched up the ox and set out. The young fellow figured that if they kept going all day and night, they'd get to the market by next morning. He walked alongside the ox and kept prodding it with a stick.

 

'Take it easy,' said the old man. 'You'll last longer.'

 

'If we get to market ahead of the others,' said his son, 'we have a better chance of getting good prices.'

 

The old man pulled his hat down over his eyes and went to sleep on the seat. Four miles and four hours down the road, they came to a little house. ' Here's your uncle's place,' said the father, waking up. 'Let's stop in and say hello.'

 

'We've lost an hour already,' complained the go-getter.

 

'Then a few minutes more won't matter,' said his father. 'My brother and I live so close, yet we see each other so seldom.'

 

The young man fidgeted while the two old gentlemen gossiped away an hour. On the move again, the father took his turn leading the ox. By and by, they came to a fork in the road. The old man directed the ox to the right. 'The left is the shorter way,' said the boy.

 

'I know it,' said the old man, 'but this way is prettier.'

 

'Have you no respect for time?' asked the impatient young man.

 

' I respect it very much,' said the old fellow. 'That's why I like to use it for looking at pretty things.' The right-hand path let through woodland and wild flowers. The young man was so busy watching the sun sink he didn't notice how lovely the sunset was. Twilight found them in what looked like one big garden. 'Let's sleep here,' said the old man.

 

'This is the last trip I take with you,' snapped his son.

 

'You're more interested in flowers than in making money.'

 

'That's the nicest thing you've said in a long time,' smiled the old fellow. A minute later he was asleep.

 

A little before sunrise, the young man shook his father awake. They hitched up and went on. a mile and an hour away they came upon a farmer trying to pull his cart out of a ditch. 'Let's give him a hand,' said the father.

 

'And lose more time?' exploded the son.

 

'Relax,' said the old man. 'You might be in a ditch some time yourself.'

 

By the time the other cart was back on the road, it was almost eight o'clock. Suddenly a great flash of lightening split the sky. Then there was thunder. Beyond the hills, the heavens grew dark. 'Looks like a big rain in the city,' said the old man.

 

'If we had been on time, we'd be sold out by now,' grumbled his son.

 

'Take it easy,' said the old gentleman, 'you'll last longer.'

 

It wasn't until late in the afternoon that they got to the top of the hill overlooking the town. They looked down at it for a long time. Neither of them spoke. Finally the young man who had been in such a hurry said, 'I see what you mean, father.'

They turned their cart around and drove away from what had once been the city of Hiroshima.

* When I reached the end of this story, I was shocked. I had served in Hiroshima for 3 years. The question I ask myself is, am I too busy for true communion with my Lord, too busy to really love those around me and too busy to enjoy His creation?

When Martin Luther was dealing with The Black Death plague, he wrote these wise words that can help inform the way we approach things happening in our world right now...

“I shall ask God mercifully to protect us. Then I shall fumigate, help purify the air, administer medicine and take it. I shall avoid places and persons where my presence is not needed in order not to become contaminated and thus perchance inflict and pollute others and so cause their death as a result of my negligence. If God should wish to take me, he will surely find me and I have done what he has expected of me and so I am not responsible for either my own death or the death of others. If my neighbor needs me however I shall not avoid place or person but will go freely as stated above. See this is such a God-fearing faith because it is neither brash nor foolhardy and does not tempt God."
